NZ4153 : Jane Jiveson's Rock

Jane Jiveson's Rock
Jane Jiveson's Rock
Jane Jiveson's Rock is a collapsed stack of Middle Magnesian Limestone breccia hardened by impregnation with chert.

The Durham Heritage Coastline has a number of curious place names used to
describe the many hazardous rocks, which are scattered along the intertidal
zone. These names were all depicted on the first maps dating to 1861
and so go back to at least the C19th and probably earlier. Some of
these names are descriptive, for example, Pincushion Rocks and The Darning
Needle. Others have origins, which are less clear. Do the Jane Jivesonís
rocks commemorate an important event in the life (or death) of Jane Jiveson?
Did the name Jane Jiveson have another meaning to the local residents of the
C19th? How did Maidenís Flat and Nanny Rainís Springs get their names? Mare and Foal is a term use elsewhere to describe rocks, usually when a large one and smaller one sit next to each other (for example the Mare and Foal on Hadrianís Wall). In an attempt to find out, the curator at Sunderland Museum was consulted, but to no effect. The names do not occur in any of the place name books of the county. Local knowledge may provide the answers.
