Penfold postbox, Royal Parade
See TQ4470 : North end of Royal Parade and TQ4470 : K6 telephone box and Penfold postbox, Royal Parade for context.
Penfold boxes are named after their designer, the architect J W Penfold, and were made between 1866 and 1879. This is a 1990 replica of one of the original design, with the aperture immediately below the cap and with no raised surround to the aperture, which dates it before 1871, which is consistent with the building of the Royal Parade in the 1860s. Only twenty originals of this particular design still exist in the country, of which almost half are in Cheltenham.
