Renovating a derelict barn
Renovating a derelict barn
Staines Barn appears to be derelict but renovation work seems to have started on the complex. The barn is situated by a sharp bend in Church Road, just east of St Andrew's church > LinkExternal link. The public bridleway leading past it - Home Piece Road - links it with The Street in Claxton. The track marks the route of the 1928 extension of a narrow gauge railway which between 1926 and 1936 ran the 1.6 kilometres from Claxton Manor Farm > LinkExternal link to the south bank of the River Yare > LinkExternal link - in 1928 it was extended south to Staines Barn, just east of the church. The railway transported sugar beet which were loaded onto wherries and transported to the Cantley sugar factory > LinkExternal link which is situated several kilometres to the north-east.
