Home, the son of Leith's Town Clerk, joined the Kirk in 1745 and took up arms against the Jacobites. The following year he was captured at the Battle of Falkirk and held prisoner in Doune Castle. His 'History of the Rebellion' is one of the main contemporary accounts of the Rising. After becoming Minister at Athelstaneford near Haddington, he incurred the wrath of the Kirk authorities and was ostracised by some of his fellow ministers for daring to write stage-plays, an activity regarded by the more traditionally-minded at the time as morally dubious. His 'Douglas' proved to be such a great success that he resigned his living and pursued a professional career as a playwright. His initial success was, however, never repeated. It is now remembered chiefly for inspiring the memorable interruption to the performance on its opening night at Covent Garden when an overly optimistic Scottish spectator stood up and shouted at the English audience, "Whaur's yer Wullie Shakespeare noo?"
