Old Signal Tower, The Shore
Old Signal Tower, The Shore
The tower, built by Robert Mylne, Master Mason to the Crown, in 1686, was originally a windmill for pressing rape-seed oil. It was converted c.1805.

It stands on The Shore where ships entering Leith landed their goods before the development of the modern docks in the 19th century. After the loss of Berwick-upon-Tweed in the 14th century, Leith became the kingdom's main port on the east coast, but declined in the 18th century as the Atlantic trade came to dominate Scotland's overseas trading links at the expense of the Baltic and Continental trade. By the end of that century it failed to impress Dr. Johnson on his visit to Edinburgh (see below).

"I was credibly informed that within the compass of one year there was shipped away from that only port of Leith fourscore thousand boles of wheat, oats, and barley, into Spain, France, and other foreign parts, and every bole contains a measure of four English bushels; so that from Leith only hath been transported 320,000 bushels of corn (...) which makes me wonder that a kingdom so populous as it is, should nevertheless sell so much bread corn beyond the seas, and yet have more than sufficient for themselves." -- John Taylor, the Water Poet, visiting Leith in 1618

"He observed of the pier or quay, "You have no occasion for so large a one; your trade does not require it; but you are like a shopkeeper who takes a shop, not only for what he has to put into it, but that it may be believed he has a great deal to put into it." It is very true, that there is now, comparatively, little trade upon the eastern coast of Scotland. The riches of Glasgow show how much there is in the west..." -- James Boswell, The Life Of Samuel Johnson, 1791
