River Trent upstream of A51 bridge
The appearance of a river can be deceptive. A major pollution incident upstream at the sewage treatment works at Stoke allowed cyanide and raw effluent to enter the river. A thirty mile stretch of the river was affected. An Environment Agency team were shown a couple of days ago on regional television wading up the river removing the dead fish and checking for any signs of life. No fish or food species were found for many miles downstream of the works.
