Machair, Berneray
Machair, Berneray
The machair is a close cropped fertile area found behind dune systems in the Western Isles. The white sand here is not just quartz from rock, but rich in ground up seashells, mostly calcium carbonate, with other minerals such as magnesium. These minerals make the ground fertile and neutralise the acidic peat soils, giving areas of great fertility. The grass is short, usually rabbit cropped.
