Castles of Munster: Gortmakellis, Tipperary
As a result of ongoing work on the upgrading of the M8/N8 from Cashel, this castle has become more accessible, ironically due to the construction of new access routes to and from the new road. Of four storeys, its roofless gables flush with the end walls once contained an attic. Although there were open wall-walks on the side walls, and bartizans on the SW and NE corners, little trace of these now remain. In 1670 the castle was held by Matthew Pennefather.
