Castles of Munster: Knockane, Tipperary

Knockane is a five storey tower house located off a minor road from the N7, just to the north of Toomyvara. It probably dates from c.1600-20. Out of shot but just discernible in the photo is a circular bartizan upon stepped corbels on the far corner. The bartizan on the opposite corner is missing, although the corbels are still there. The tall chimneystack rising above the west wall served a fireplace on the fifth storey level, whilst the small chimneys on the gables are dummies.
