The former dark peaty soil has gradually wasted away following drainage and arable cultivation. Ploughing has brought up subsoil material the whitish colours are of a sandy silt loam Eag horizon and the strong brown colour of a gravelly Btg horizon from beneath that. The soil type is Ireton Series, classified as 8.73 argillic humic gley soils.
