Unbridged bridges in Crossflat Road
The nearer abutment took the Caledonian line from Lanark to Muirkirk over Crossflat Road; the further one carried ironmaster Baird's Muirkirk Iron Works to Glenbuck line. The latter’s parallel canal bringing water from the River Ayr to the iron works would have passed under the road a short distance behind the camera. My friend in blue is at the start of the footpath, now part of the Ayr River Walkway, which was in the process of being constructed along the Caley's railway line eastwards. According to a notice seen at the end of Foundry Road in Muirkirk, one could reach this point on the "Old Railway Walk" by following either Baird's line alongside the canal as far as the Auldhouseburn road or by taking the slightly higher level route along the southern part of the line that led up to a quarry above Auldhouseburn and deviating to pass down through the farm (the farmer is very friendly and also a keen walker). The Auldhouseburn road joins Crossflat Road just below the missing bridges.
