Stand of pine trees
These pine trees, which cover only a fairly small area (not much larger than can be seen in the photo) stand on the northern side of a track between Kipperoch Farm and Walton Farm; see NS3677 : Track between Kipperoch and Walton.
In front of them is a single skeletal birch tree, which had undergone rapid deterioration in recent years as a result of being infected by the Birch Polypore Fungus. For a view of the fungal fruiting bodies on this tree, and a description of the decomposition process, see NS3677 : Birch Polypore (Piptoporus betulinus).
