NY4811 : Captain Whelter Beck

taken 14 years ago, near to Mardale Common [other Features], Cumbria, Great Britain

Captain Whelter Beck
Captain Whelter Beck
Where it meets Hopgill Beck by the old washfold. The Beck flows from an area called Captain Whelter Bog on Selside Pike. Whelter apparently comes from old norse 'hwilft' a hollow combe. There is a Whelter Crag opposite across Haweswater which was named as such in 1366.It appears that Captain Whelter was a Kendal Archer who is said to have ambushed a party of Scots by Castle Crag and buried then nearby.
