This gateway, at the centre of the eastern side of the marketplace, leads into the grounds of the Bishop's Palace and was built in around 1450. Slightly to the north, and attached via intermediate buildings, is the ST5545 : Wells: Penniless Porch which gives access to the cathedral grounds.
