This was taken shortly after a spectacular flypast over HMS Illustrious, which was timed to perfection as the aircraft arrived precisely at 2pm.
Thousands of people had waited patiently for the flypast over the aircraft carrier, which was berthed at Liverpool's Cruise Liner Terminal. The ship was visiting Liverpool between 22-27 October 2009 as part of the Navy’s celebration of its centenary of aviation, Fly Navy 100, and the flypast of naval aircraft was reported to include Merlin, Sea King and Lynx helicopters, Falcon and Hawk jets, GR9 Harriers, Fireflys, Seafire and Sea Fury. HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, took the salute.
