Corporal Punishment ceased in Scottish state schools in 1986 but Fife Council have just allowed former Inverkeithing Primary School building to be flogged at auction.

The former school was built in 1874 (juniors) and 1913 (seniors) and is situated on Roods Road which runs parallel to the High Street behind the shops on the left side of this photo.

It is rumoured that the former school might be turned into residential property and that will need a builder. We wonder if the developer might have a double barrelled name like ...- Tawse? On the issue of builders' names, schools and punishment there's a lovely history here about the lash (or the belt) for those of you old enough to remember or have experienced "The Lochgelly":

Though slightly disturbing is the realisation that they are still offered for sale to erm..collectors with the extra heavyweight 3-tail model retailing at a hand-rubbing £250. "Well kids, see what Dad has got you for Christmas". Some say outlawed less on humanitarian grounds than upon the belated realisation that the weans in some schools were competing to see who could build the greatest tally. Well I didn't much like getting thrashed at school so it kept me pretty much in check...most of the time.
