Going out in a blaze of colour
As the days get shorter and shorter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis and so the trees begin to shut down their food-making factories, or leaves. The green chlorophyll disappears and as the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellows, reds, browns and oranges, as shown in this example. Small amounts of these colours have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll.
The trees will rest through the winter, living off the food they stored during the summer.
