SO6324 : Sunlight on a sycamore leaf
near to Weston Under Penyard, Herefordshire, Great Britain

Sunlight on a sycamore leaf
The sycamore can usually be relied on for a lovely yellow display in autumn. Some of the leaves on this specimen have already started to turn. In spring and summer, when the sun is brightest, chlorophyll is plentiful and it overshadows the ever-present chemicals that create the autumn colours we are so familiar with - red and purple (anthocyanin); orange (carotene), yellow (xanthophyll) and brown (tannins). In this shot, the sun catches one leaf showing up the yellowing edges.
