The leaves on the willow are starting to drop as autumn progresses. Compare this to a winter view when the pond or 'moat' was covered with ice and snow SO6324 : Snowy crenellations
The mock castle (part of the wall is shown here in reflection), was built in the 18th century by one of the Merrick family in an attempt to persuade a Spanish girl to marry him. It was supposed to make her feel more at home. Alas, she was not tempted by his efforts.
