Sunset at Newstead Abbey
The last rays of the setting sun light up the stone of the ruined abbey.
Newstead Abbey
Newstead Abbey was originally an Augustinian priory, founded by Henry II around 1170. A small religious community existed here until Henry VIII dissolved the monastery in 1539. Henry then granted Newstead to Sir John Byron, who converted the priory into a house. The 6th Baron Byron, the famous poet George Gordon Byron, inherited the title and estate in 1798 at the age of ten and lived here on rare occasions.
