Whitefriars gateway from Whitefriars Lane
Whitefriars gateway from Whitefriars Lane
Whitefriars gateway[1] is starting to look a little beleaguered as the office block beyond takes shape and the building alongside, damaged by fire, is fenced off during demolition work.

1. Whitefriars gateway
The gateway dates from about the mid fourteenth century. It is thought to have been originally constructed as a plain arch leading to Whitefriars Monastery and that, when John Hales took over the buildings after the dissolution of the monastery, he had a second wall built parallel to the arch and a room slung between the two. This has been deduced from the projection of the timber-framed upper room into the upper part of the arch and the fact that there are no stone side walls. A grade II* listed building.
