SU4729 : Westgate from HCC offices
near to Winchester, Hampshire, Great Britain

Westgate from HCC offices
Taken from the entrance to the Hampshire County Council Offices (Elizabeth II Court) looking across the top end of the High Street. The Westgate, to the left, is the Medieval incarnation of a gate on the city wall that was first positioned and constructed during Roman times. After the Norman invasion it formed part of the defensive wall of Winchester Castle, but along with the Great Hall this is the only thing that remains of the castle. The buildings opposite, also part of the Hampshire County Council office complex, are Victorian.
