Canongate Tolbooth.
Canongate Tolbooth.
This 16th Century stone building with its overhanging clock was once the town hall of the former Canongate burgh. It stands on the Canongate, part of the "Royal Mile". In the 18th Century, it was used as a prison (Scots - tolbooth)and today contains the Tolbooth Tavern and a museum, the "People's Story". Note the corbelled tower, the crow-stepped gable and the forestair - all examples of Scots architecture.
