Gainsthorpe Deserted Medieval Village
Undulations in the field mark the site of the deserted village of Gainsthorpe, the foundations of over 100 buildings were still extant in 1697, though there's nothing above ground today. It lies just 400m west of the Roman road Ermine Street and was supposed to be a Roman settlement until a pioneering aerial photography flight in 1925 disproved this assumption Link
