In the early 1980's cross-country (or Nordic) skiing became popular, helped by cheaper imported skis and gear and several winters with snow at lower levels. The forest trails held on to snowfall well, and the Rothiemurchus area generally was one focus for this activity. Since then, milder winters have ensued and now the cyclists hold sway.
