SK1715 : Canal, Boom, Weir and River
near to Alrewas, Staffordshire, Great Britain

Canal, Boom, Weir and River
The weir was constructed to maintain a constant water level for the Trent and Mersey Canal, which uses the course of the River Trent for a short distance north of Alrewas.
The boom on the left prevents canal boats from being swept onto the weir. To the left of the boom, the river level is maintained by the canal as far as Wychnor Lock. This picture was taken with the sun low, in late evening, hence the golden glow to the trees. A lone heron stands, maybe hoping for a final catch in the fading rays of sunlight.
