Chale: St. Catherine’s Oratory
Chale: St. Catherine’s Oratory
The remaining tower of a church that was built in 1328. According to the noticeboard, Walter do Godeton, Lord of Chale, took wine belonging to a French monastery from a shipwreck, and was fined and threatened with excommunication unless he built an oratory on this hill. It incorporated a beacon, which continued in use until the 17th centure although the oratory had fallen into disuse a hundred years earlier.
