George V postbox with a suffragette connection, Risca Road, Newport
In 1913 a small incendiary device was posted in this box. The perpetrator was Margaret Haig Mackworth a member of the Women's Social and Political Union (suffragettes) and the act was part of an arson campaign. A number of letters and cards were burnt and Margaret was fined £10 with £10 costs. On refusing to pay, she was committed to Usk prison Link
where she went on hunger strike. She was released under the ‘Cat and Mouse Act’ and her fine was paid anonymously.
Later, she wrote about how she travelled home from London by train with a flimsy basket containing glass tubes of the chemicals for the incendiary device.
Margaret was the daughter of David Alfred Thomas Link
who became Lord Rhondda and following his death she became Viscountess Rhondda. She gave the Sugar Loaf Link
, to the National Trust in 1936.
