Bridge No. 1, Coventry Canal
Bridge No. 1, Coventry Canal
Also known as Drapers Fields bridge[1], viewed from the Coventry canal basin side. Three different horizons can be seen in the brickwork above the arch.
1. Drapers Fields bridge
Bridge No. 1 over the Coventry Canal, from Leicester Row to Drapers Fields. The bridge was built very low and with no towpath as a measure to prevent access to the basin at night, when a beam was put across the entrance. It also had a means for a toll keeper to measure how low the boats were sitting in the water as they entered or left, from which he calculated cargo weights and their relevant tolls. A grade II listed building.
