The Trent and Mersey Canal was opened in 1777. It had been engineered by James Brindley through the previous eleven years while its 93.5 mile course was being built. Here it approaches Alrewas, crossed by the bridge (No 49A) carrying a structure more than two centuries newer - the Alrewas by-pass.
