The Old Cock Inn, 77 Friar Street
The large black & gold plaque above the door reads: "The Old Cock Inn 1712 Licensed in the 10th Year of Queen Anne". However, in the Francis Firth photographic collection, there is a view of the pub taken in 1910. The inscription is longer and reads: "The Old Cock Inn, by Walter Harrison, licensed in the tenth year of the reign of Queen Anne. Retailer of foreign Wines and Spirits".
Despite the church window in the front, this was not a religious building. The window, with its early 14th century decorated Y-tracery, was rescued from the ruined church of St. Nicholas, which stood further along on the other side of Friar Street. Its site has disappeared under the ring road. The window was apparently installed before the building became licensed. Behind it is an 18th century assembly room. The pink timber-framed building on the right dates from the late 16th century.
On the pub's chimney can be seen a Cockerel weather vane. SO8963 : The Old Cock Inn pub sign, 77 Friar Street.
