Waxcaps at Hopetoun House
Waxcaps at Hopetoun House
These are Hygrocybe splendidissima, but the lawns around the house are rich with many different species in late autumn, of many bright colours. A not-too-diligent search in pouring rain produced a total of 38 waxcaps and ecologically related species [fairy clubs, earth tongues and pink gills – the four small purplish ones to the left], which makes the site one of international importance for these fungi.
