Inside a Gatepost

I have never noticed anything like this before. The wood in the inside of this gatepost has mostly rotted away, but it has left behind the 'roots' of branches which would have formed knots, but have been cut off when the log was shaped into a gatepost. There is also a hopeful shoot beginning to grow out of the hollow, just where the 'roots' originate. I apologise for the intrusion of my left foot into the picture; I was too busy worrying about where my right one was to notice the left was in view.
