Ash lagoon with bird life
Waste ash from Cockenzie power station is mixed with seawater and pumped in by pipeline, where it settles in the lagoon area. The land can be reclaimed eventually, as has been done just to the east where there is a car park, woodland and ponds. Birds here are roosting after feeding on the nearby sea and sands, giving an interesting example of wildlife taking advantage of industrial activity.
