The Earth Pillars

This hill, like most of the land on the east bank of the River Spey, is made up of a thick deposit of red glacial till dumped by glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. The till is soft and unconsolidated, and readily eroded by wind and water. Here, halfway up the slope, the erosion has left some of the soft till standing proud while continuing to erode round it. The resulting pillars are known as the Earth Pillars, and there is a path to a view point overlooking them, with one of the best views anywhere of the River Spey (if you ignore the crassly insensitively sited power lines, which you can see on both sides of this image) - See NJ3356 : Earth Pillars View at Aultdearg. However the best view of the pillars is from the opposite bank, where the view of them is not obscured by vegetation.
