The approach to Bywell St. Peter
Shows the location of NZ0461 : Bywell Village Cross. Pevsner says that "Bywell is probably the most beautifully placed, picturesque and architecturally rewarding group of buildings in the Tyne Valley. It is set a little above the wide river and possesses, besides the large landscaped grounds of Bywell Hall, two ancient churches next to each other, and a castle. ... Bywell cannot strictly be called a village, since its houses and cottages were swept away by mid-19th C landscaping and its villagers resettled in Stocksfield, conveniently out of sight on the S bank of the river." There has been a settlement at Bywell since Roman times.
