Elephant Stone
From within the Kemerton Hill Fort looking north-west across the Avon and Severn valleys to the north half of the Malvern Hills. The Elephant (or Banbury) stone sits within a large dip on the edge of the escarpment. The collection of natural conglomerate boulders here formed in the cracks of the Oolitic limestone and became exposed when the softer surrounding rock weathered away. It gets its name because it looks uncannily like a kneeling pachyderm (facing left). According to local folklore, it likes to wander down to the River Avon once in a while to take a drink.
