Radcliffe Observatory at dusk
The observatory was begun in 1772 and completed in 1794 to James Wyatt's design. It was used for astronomical observation until 1934, then employed by a succession of medical departments before becoming part of Green Templeton College, as it is now.
Its octagonal tower was modelled on the first-century Temple of the Winds in Athens, and is crowned by Hercules and Atlas supporting a globe with reliefs of the Winds below. The first floor is decorated with pilasters and reliefs of the signs of the zodiac, surmounted by a balustrade.
