Radcliffe Observatory, inside the cupola
There is an upper gallery for astronomical observation below the dome.
The work of the observatory was initially if great importance but as Oxford increased in size and developed as an industrial centre deteriorating atmospheric conditions hampered observations. In the 1920 it was decided to replace this observatory with a new one in South Africa.
