The Radcliffe Infirmary from the Radcliffe Observatory
This zoomed shot gives a good view of the rear of the C18 infirmary now that adjacent structures have been demolished prior to redevelopment.
The infirmary, named for Dr John Radcliffe, opened in 1770 admitting seven patients to the two wards, the following year 2 more wards were opened. Various later additions and extensions were made including the Oxford Eye Hospital. Penicillin was first tested here. It was Oxford's main general hospital for around 300 years until the new John Radcliffe hospital in Headington took over. The infirmary closed in 2007 and was handed over to the University for administrative use.
