Obolensky statue
Obolensky statue
Born in Russia but educated in England, this statue in memory of Prince Alexander Obolensky commemorates two aspects of his life. He was a legendary rugby union player, representing England in 1936 at Twickenham in their first-ever win against the All Blacks. He was known as the 'Prince of Pace' and scored two breathtaking tries in that match, one of which was known as "the greatest England try ever". In 1939 he joined the RAF and became a Pilot Officer. He died of a broken neck when his Hawker Hurricane crash-landed at Martlesham Airfield in 1940. He is buried in Ipswich Cemetery. An annual lecture on rugby, the Obolensky Lecture, is held in his honour, whilst Twickenham Stadium has a suite named Obolensky's.

A project was launched in Ipswich in 2008 to erect a permanent memorial, and on 18 February 2009 this statue by Harry Gray in Cromwell Square, Ipswich, was unveiled by his niece, Princess Alexandra Obolensky.
