The Cenotaph
A cenotaph is a tomb or a monument erected in honour of a person or group of persons whose remains are elsewhere. The word derives from the Greek, meaning 'empty tomb'. This, in Whitehall, is the most famous. Designed by Sir Edward Lutyens and constructed in Portland stone by Holland, Hannan & Cubitts, it is completely plain, save for a carved wreath on each end and the words "The Glorious Dead", chosen by Rudyard Kipling, whose own son was killed in the WW1. In the distance can be seen the more modern memorial to the women of WW2 Link
