Gazelle at Longmoor Camp
Gazelle at Longmoor Camp
Gazelle has been claimed to be the smallest standard gauge steam locomotive ever built.
Originally built in 1893 as a 2-2-2WT (well tank), it was converted to 0-4-2WT in 1911 by Colonel Stephens for use on the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire Railway. The S&MR was taken over by the War Department in 1941 but abandoned a few years later.
Gazelle was transferred to Longmoor and displayed outside the camp. See LinkExternal link.
After closure of the Longmoor Military Railway, Gazelle was transferred to the National Railway Museum. See SE5951 : 'Gazelle' at the National Railway Museum.
Gazelle is currently at the Colonel Stephens Railway Museum at Tenterden. See LinkExternal link.
