NJ9308 : St Machar's Cathedral
near to Old Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Great Britain

St Machar's Cathedral
The cathedral stands at the heart of the oldest part of Old Aberdeen, overlooking Seaton Park. The church has a 6th century foundation and legend has it that St Machar was commanded by God in a dream to establish it where the River Don curved in the shape of a bishop's crosier - this cannot be true, however, because bishops did not then have shaped crosiers. There is some doubt as to the identity of St Machar; traditionally he was supposed to have been a companion of St Columba on his journey to Iona, but recent research has suggested that the name actually refers to more than one person.
