SN9779 : Hedge

taken 13 years ago, near to Tylwch, Powys, Great Britain

Near Tylwch, south of Llanidloes. Hedge laying is carried out in the Winter months while the sap is down. Rubbish such as deadwood, ivy and old fencing is cleared and then each tree is pruned of large side branches before being cut at an angle until flexible enough to cut down. Stakes are placed along the line of the hedge and then the cut trees (pleachers) are laid into the stakes and as much as possible are woven into them.
