Sheep collection
Sheep collection
A collection of various sheep at Bowmont, including both a coloured and white Ryeland. Coloured Ryelands are a controversial breed, despised by traditionalists, but very popular with breeders. I possibly has a small part in their take up,having lobbied hard at home for selective breeding from a batch of "throwback" coloured lambs, in 1983 as the "hippies like undyed wool". We kept the otherwise doomed tup responsible for the next year, and the flock is now roughly 50:50 Normally they would be automatically destined for the table for not holding to the breed characteristics. First time I have seen them elsewhere.
