NJ6823 : Maiden Causeway, on Bennachie

taken 22 years ago, 3 km from Oyne, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Maiden Causeway, on Bennachie.
Maiden Causeway, on Bennachie.
This prehistoric footpath leading up to the hillfort on the Mither Tap of Bennachie has an interesting story to its name. A girl is supposed to have accepted a marriage proposal on the proviso that, by the next morning, the suitor had built a road up Bennachie. The road was built - obviously by "Old Nick". Here are scattered silver birches on the heather moorland. The footpath has been improved due to the large number of walkers on the hill.
