This triangulation pillar on the embanked perimeter of Crownhill Fort was one of the original points that formed the Plymouth Base Line in the triangulation of the UK. The structure on which it stands is the HAXO (a gun emplacement within an earth covered bomb-proof vault) of No. 16 gun position.
