NN2903 : Doom

near to Arrochar, Argyll And Bute, Great Britain

The pub garden at The Village will be safeguarded by this device. Midges make outdoor life difficult if not unbearable, and the pub has a lovely garden, now especially popular as it is illegal to smoke in public indoors. So to protect the customers a "midge eater" has been installed. Midges detect their prey by following a Carbon dioxide gradient in the air and also from certain organic compounds on animal breath. The burning propane produces the Carbon dioxide, and by adding a few goodies the midges move in, where they are sucked into a bag. One of these can clear a full acre of midges. Beyond across the road Loch Long runs up beside Arrochar.
