SK0369 : Old course of A53, Axe Edge

taken 18 years ago, 3 km from Flash, Staffordshire, England

Old course of A53, Axe Edge
The 1940s map shows the A53 negotiating this sharp curve at Cistern's Clough, but the road has since been straightened and now crosses the valley on an embankment. The redundant loop of road is marked as a parking area on the modern map, but has been blocked off recently by a pile of rubble at one end and a metal barrier at the other (out of sight in this picture). The reason for the closure of the layby was given as fly-tipping, but this still goes on - the rubble barrier has been "supplemented" with rubbish. This photo was taken on a misty day from the footpath that leads down Cistern's Clough to the layby.
